2003 Fred
Lebow Award
Earle C. Reed
Earle Reed is presently Vice-Chairman of ECR International,
Inc., a newly formed company that includes Utica
Boilers and Oneida Royal in Utica, New York; EMI
in Rome, New York; Dunkirk Boilers in Dunkirk,
New York and Olsen in Wallaceburg, Ontario. Earle
has over 35 years with ECR International, Inc.
and plans to retire at the end of 2003. Earle is
especially proud that his brother Tim and cousin
Tom will be running ECR International, Inc. upon
his retirement.
A graduate of New Hartford High School, Boston
University and having also completed the Advance
Management program at the State University of
New York Institute of Technology at Utica-Rome,
Earle serves on the Board of Boilermaker Road
Race, Inc., Utica First Insurance Co., Commercial
Travelers Insurance, and Adirondack Bank. He
was active on the Boards of the St. Luke’s
Memorial Hospital, the Community Foundation (formally
Utica Foundation), United Cerebral Palsy Foundation,
Central New York Arts Council, Boiler Hydronics
Institute, New York State Troopers Foundation
and Edge Group.
Earle has received many
Community Awards, such as Business Person of
the Year in 1986, Leonard Wilbur Award in 1988
and the Distinguished Service Award from SUNYIT.
Earle also received Runner’s
World magazine’s distinguished “Bob
Rodale Golden Shoe Award” in July 1993 and
Road Race Management’s Race Director of the
Year Award in 1998. An avid runner, Earle has competed
in many road races including 4 Boston Marathons
and has been inducted into the Greater Utica Sports
Hall of Fame in Utica, New York.
In 1978 Earle was looking
for an appropriate way to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of his family’s
company, Utica Radiator (now ECR International,
Inc.). He wanted it to be a public event that would
benefit the community, while supporting and promoting
the strong local tradition of competitive distance
running, a sport very close to his heart. With
the kind of determination that drives all dedicated
recreational runners, Earle convinced his father,
Bob Reed, President of Utica Radiator, and the
company’s treasurer, Jim Benson, to provide
$750 to underwrite a new local long distance road
race, which became known as “The Boilermaker.” With
additional assistance from co-founder F.X. Matt
II, President of The Matt Brewing Co., the first
Boilermaker was run on July 16, 1978 with 800 participants.
Now the largest 15K Road Race in the United States,
the Boilermaker has grown to over 12,000 participants
in its 25th year. Earle was Race Director of the
Boilermaker for 24 years and is currently Co-Director
of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame.
Earle has a brother, Tim (New Hartford, NY), two
sisters, Martha (MA) and Jane (OH). His 17-year-old
daughter, Briana, lives with her mother, Lois in
Barneveld, NY. He will always remember his late
Dad, Bob, and his 88-year-old Mother, Grace, who
now lives in Beaufort, SC. |
