NATIONAL
DISTANCE RUNNING HALL OF FAME INDUCTS 5TH CLASS
UTICA, N.Y. - July 13, 2002
- The Stanley Performing Arts Center was host to
the 5th
induction ceremony of the National Distance Running
Hall of Fame on Sat., July 13 at
5pm, an event that attracted more than 2,000 people,
as four nationally esteemed athletes
were inducted, and three awards were bestowed upon
athletes that have profoundly
impacted the running world.
After welcoming honored guests,
relatives and runners, Master of Ceremonies
Larry Rawson of ESPN told the audience, "When
this thing (the race) is over
with, promise me that youll go out and have
some fun."
Following his welcome, the
world-acclaimed soprano, Colleen Gaetano, sang the
national anthem.
The Class of 2002 honored
during the ceremony was not graduating from high
school
or college, but rather consisted of four running
legends, the late Bill Bowerman,
John J. Kelley, the late Browning Ross and Doris
Brown Heritage, all inducted into the
National Distance Running Hall of Fame this year.
"He affected more runners
in more ways than any other American
he lived
to get
through to you," said presenter Kenny Moore
about inductee Bill Bowerman.
Several award presentations
accompanied the inductions, and after brief biographical
movie segments were shown, presenters nostalgically
spoke about the recipients, sharing
tidbits of their relationships with the people for
whom the awards were given. Recipients
were nominated and selected based on a number of
criteria. The awards and recipients were:
Bill Bowerman Award: Bill Squires
George Sheehan Award: Kenny Moore
Suzy Komen Award: Bev Veals
In his acceptance speech, Squires inspired the audience
by reminiscing about his past
coaching career, shared anecdotes, and offered words
of wisdom for all. "The road to
the finish line is paved with ups and downs
but
if we have a sense of humor, a dose
of patience and a dash of humility, well be
successful in life."
The induction ceremony was
one of a number of events going on during this National
Distance
Running Hall of Fame Weekend, and was a kick-off
to the nations largest 15K, the Utica
Boilermaker road race that began at 8am the following
morning.
The first 2,000 guests that
entered the doors at the Stanley on Saturday afternoon
received a National Distance Running Hall of Fame
commemorative poster designed
by artist Andrew Yelenak, whose work has appeared
at events such as the Boston,
New York, and Hartford Marathons.
